Oct 31, 2016 7:36 AM

The Boston Red Sox haven't informed Clay Buchholz whether or not they will exercise his option for the 2017 season.

The club holds a $13.5 million option on Buchholz, who they told prior to the end of the 2015 regular season that they would trigger his option for this season.

The Red Sox have until five days after the end of the World Series to make a formal decision.

Cubs Will Invite All Coaches To Return For 2017

Nov 1, 2016 1:09 AM

The Chicago Cubs will invite all of their coaches to return for another season as the team has made the playoffs in back-to-back years, now including their first World Series appearance in 71 seasons.

"It is unusual to have that many (coaches) stick and it's unusual to have that kind of success with that group also," Joe Maddon said.

Davey Martinez is the one coach who could be on the move, as he's been rumored to be a candidate for the vacant manager's job with the Colorado Rockies.

CBA Rules Could 'Roll Over' Through Offseason

Nov 1, 2016 1:09 AM

Both Rob Manfred and Major League Baseball Players Association head Tony Clark have expressed optimism that a work stoppage can be avoided with the current collective bargaining agreement set to expire on December 1.

There is still work to be done on a new deal despite Manfred saying in the past that he hoped a deal would be completed by the end of the postseason.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes that the current CBA could be "rolled over for at least this offseason."

A rollover of the current rules could keep this winter's free agent market from stalling by allowing free agents to negotiate with teams without either party worrying about how a new agreement might affect them.

Rob Manfred Against Changing DH Rule For World Series

Oct 29, 2016 11:19 AM

Rob Manfred isn't in favor of playing the World Series under a single set of rules in future seasons.

The Cleveland Indians played Carlos Santana, their usual designated hitter, in left field at Wrigley Field on Friday night.

"I think the problem is picking what that one set of rules is," Manfred said.

"The National League plays without a DH all year. Their team is built to play without a DH. It's the opposite in the American League. And I think the competitive ramifications of picking a single set of rules would be significant.

"Both teams have to adjust. Each of them has to adjust at some point in the series. And given that we play the game two different ways during the year, that makes some sense to me."

Kyle Schwarber Not Cleared To Play In Field

Oct 28, 2016 7:25 AM

Kyle Schwarber will be limited to pinch-hit duty as the World Series shifts to Wrigley Field.

Schwarber, who returned to the lineup in Game 1 as the designated hitter at Progressive Field, missed all but three games during the regular season with a knee injury.

After speaking with doctors on Thursday, the Chicago Cubs decided it was best he not play defense.

"Kyle has not been medically cleared to play the field, so he will not be in the lineup the next three games," Theo Epstein said. "But we do look forward to him impacting the game as a pinch hitter for us, and certainly should the series return to Cleveland, he'll be eligible to continue as a designated hitter."

Schwarber and his surgically repaired left knee had been cleared to hit and run the bases 10 days ago, but not to do any lateral running needed to play the outfield.

"It's not disappointing at all," Schwarber said. "It was a long shot at the most. You know, obviously I want to be out there for my teammates and everything, it's just the competitor inside me, but facts are facts. I just can't physically do it."
